I received the latest DD Hammock system to give a test and promptly set off into the wilds to give it some.
Firstly the specs on the Hammock.
Size: 2.7m x 1.4m (comfy for people up to 6ft 5 and 150kg)
Colour: Olive Green
Weight: 950g
Whats Included: 10m of Webbing, 2 x 2m of Elastic Cord and a Small Stuff Sack.
The Hammock was a real breeze to put up and came with ample webbing, if you can tie your shoelaces you can put this baby up, wrap the webbing a couple of times around the tree and secure with a bow knot sufficed.
Next I wanted to arch the netting to keep it off me when inside the hammock so a couple of small sticks about the diameter of my little finger from a fir tree looked like they would do the trick.
I passed a stick through the five loops at each end and secured to the tree by way of the supplied elastic cord.
I wanted a warm butt so I lay an inflatable camp mat in between the bottom layers of material at the base, blew the mat up for a few seconds then fastened together the layers with the three Velcro tabs.
I opened the net section with the double two way zips and climbed in, at each end just before the zipper there is a pocket which was a handy new addition, a thermal mug fits lovely but could easily be used for stashing a torch when sleeping.
Overall size was great for my 6'3'' body with room to spare, craftsmanship of a good quality with no loose threads dangling and the new waterproof material is comfortable.
I like the way you can open up the bug netting and still use the hammock as a seat, the sealed hammock systems with bottom entry make this almost impossible.
DD do sell this as a hammock/bivouac and although the material seems to be the same as used in the tarp the seams are not tapped so water would come through the stitching.
Floor setup as a bivi though would work with the tarp over and at least the waterproof hammock material would keep your mat and bag dry and the bugs off you.
Time to get the tarp out.
Size: 3m x 3m
Colour: Olive Green
Weight: 650g (not including pegs)
Includes: 4 x 2m Guy Lines and 4 Pegs.
Nineteen attachment points make this a very versatile tarp allowing various setup options with or without the hammock.
The four corners are the strongest attachment points being reinforced with extra material.
